Fabrizio Bosso Quartet With Fabrizio Bosso (trumpet), Luca Mannutza (piano), Luca Bulgarelli (double-bass) and Lorenzo Tucci (drum)
Music: Riz Ortolani, P. Umiliani, P. Di Capri, T. Renis, E. Vianello, B. Nelson, A.C.Jobim, E. Morricone
Il Sorpasso is one of the most important italian movie ever. The masterpiece of “Commedia all’Italiana” genre. It represents a good picture of Italy at the edge of its economic “boom” during ’60.
The intent was to perform the “speed” of this fantastic car, riding the primitives highways of Italy and describing it on stage with the help of jazz music.
Only the marvelous Fabrizio Bosso and his “virtuoso” fellows could perform this speed and tell us about the two different characters as they were plaid by Vittorio Gassman and Jean Louis Trintignant until the final tragedy.
We kept some dialogues from the original sound track, just to help the audience to follow the original plot, letting the rest of the movie to jazz and to the improvisation of the musicians. And even the original sound track introduces some famous tunes from the great repertory of Italian light music (here arranged in jazz): The hit “Quando, quando, quando” by Tony Renis is at the second place after “Volare”, in the Italian international “most famous song” chart of all times. “Con le pinne, il fucile e gli occhiali” and “guarda come dondolo” by Edoardo Vianello are a good example of Italian easy listening of early sixties. And also the rock and roll genre is coming up with “Don’t play that song you lead” by Bettie Nelson and Ahmet Ertegun. Peppino Di Capri is also plaid from the original sound track with his “Per un attimo”. “Gassman Blues” by Piero Umiliani , “Chega de Saudade” by Antonio Carlos Jobim and “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” by Ennio Morricone aren’t in the original sound track but they were chosen because they are able to describe the foolish ride of the car, the joyful days of the two men in holydays and the sadness of the final tragedy. But “The Sorpasso Theme” by Riz Ortolani is really “starring” in our show, performed whenever by the band: at the beginning, in the middle and even at the end of the show. The track list of our show is completed by a couple of tunes performed by the Fabrizio Bosso Quartet on a sequence of pictures from the movie. One of it, it is “Estate” by Bruno Martino an also Italian well known ever green.
